    Doors Open, a Novel by Ian Rankin.  I’m a big Ian Rankin fan.  This is a little different than his other ones, and I like it.

     

    Pilgrim in the Palace of Words: A journey through the 6,000 languages of earth by Glenn Dixon.  Words are concepts not representations of things.  Buying is a very different act all over the world.  Noam Chomsky believes we are hard wired for grammar and language structure.  Others believe our thoughts and our world view are shaped by our language.

     

    A Week at the Airport by Alain de Botton.  As always, his books are a great exploration of life and a delightful painting of place and people.

     

    Simple Country Wisdom: 101 Old-fashioned ideas to simplify your life by Susan Waggoner.  I actually read the whole thing.  Be mindful – take the time to do it right.

     

    Sailing Away From Winter: A cruise from Nova Scotia to Florida and beyond by Silver Donald Cameron.

    There’s always a way – and if the first doesn’t work, there’s a second and a third.  If you don’t know how to do it, your neighbour does.  Someone in the village has the tools you need; just ask around.  The greatest tool of all is the community itself, with its pool of knowledge and imagination.  With that, you can certainly move boats.  And wharves.  And houses.  And probably mountains as well.

     

    The Writing Circle: a Novel by Corinne Demas.  A group of people help and support each other (sometimes) in their writing and in their lives.

     

    What Women Want: the global market turns female friendly by Paco Underhill.  His company, Envirosell, consults with retailers about how to sell effectively.  They have documented several differences: security being a big one and that includes feeling safe to ask questions and explore new products and ideas.  Women want to know what it will do and how it will help her make her family happy, rather than how fast it goes or how big the motor is.

     

    Start With Why: how great leaders inspire everyone to take action by Simon Sinek.  He says, “People don’t buy what you are selling, they buy why you are selling it.”  The main message is in his TED talk.  The book delves a little deeper and includes more examples.  This was our most recent book club book.
