The MBA model of business was designed in the early part of the last century as a way to break down the functional areas of management for large businesses. Business was divided into marketing, operations, finance and HR. That doesn’t work when management is one person or a small cohesive team.
The MBA model is the default operating system for every small business. When things get tough ‘they’ tell us to get back to basics – marketing, operations, finance and HR. When we do, we get better marketing, operations, finance and HR, not more and better customers, not an easier business to run, not numbers that matter and not happy, engaged employees.
That’s because we can’t be experts in all those things and to execute on them well, we have to be.
Here’s the thing, you are an expert in serving your customers. You are an expert in your business. You could be an expert in making your business work even better for you and you could be, or you already are, an expert in attracting a great team and helping them engage and grow with you.
You don’t need to know how to craft the perfect ad, if your customers are thrilled with what you do and are telling everyone they meet. Attracting and keeping happy and engaged employees is easy when you treat them as humans, rather than a number, or a resource to be exploited. You can master that. Everything you do in your business should be for the benefit of your customers, your staff and you, rather than to benefit made up metrics from a business text book.
There is a better way!
I’m Frances Schagen and I owned Crystal Clear Bookkeeping Ltd. for 15 years. I had the privilege of being invited to dive deeply into 100’s of businesses. I saw what worked, and what didn’t. I watched some small business owners struggle for years and some make steady progress.
Watching this I could see there was a fundamental flaw with the way small business was done. I knew there had to be a better way.
I dove in deeper. I read, went to conferences, studied everything and asked questions of every business owner I met. It was clear that ‘the way it should be done’ was not working. If it were, small business owners wouldn’t be struggling the way they are. Instead they would be thriving.
What is the problem?
We’re told that in order to succeed, we need to master marketing, operations, finance and human resources. Here’s the thing: that only gives us better marketing, more efficient operations, accurate financials and employees who toe the line. That doesn’t help us get plenty of the best customers, laser-like focus on doing exactly the right work, numbers that matter and amazing employees who make our lives easier.
Once I recognized this was the problem, I was able to drill deep down into business and think about what the perfect small business operating system would be. And that’s when I came up with this.

What is the answer?
The SB/OS is about the 3 most important people in your business: you, the owner; your customers and your staff (or contractors/suppliers/partnering businesses). Each takes a Journey through your business, from attraction, through engagement until it all begins and ends with serving & delighting. Nail that – and we can all get our heads around that, can’t we? – and you have a business that works for you and is a joy to run.
After 20 years I can confidently say I have the answer. Would you like to try a new way of getting the best customers? One that makes sense? One that you can understand? One that gives you maximum results – like profit, with the minimum of effort? One that steers you to working only on the tasks that give you the best results.
Even though this makes all the sense in the world, this is a new concept. It will take as much time to unlearn the old ways as it does to learn this new way. I will use brain and behavioral science to help you. It takes more than knowledge. You need to know how the knowledge applies to your business and what a successful outcome will be, so you know where you are headed .You need to turn this into habits and processes in your business.
