Mastery in Your Business

Your business has many roles in your life beyond providing for your economic needs. Today we’re talking about Mastery in your business.

Mastery is one of the keys to fulfillment. We crave a sense of improvement. We want to know we are getting better at doing what is important to us.

How can you bring mastery to your business for you, possibly your customers and definitely your team?

It’s your business and it should be built from your strengths. Your strengths are your best place to experience improvement. Mastery comes from taking a skill from good to great. You won’t experience mastery with a skill that is not a fit for you. This isn’t about learning how to do everything in your business, but about choosing to focus your energy in your genius and becoming great at it.

Mastery is intimately tied to The Zone. You get into the Zone when you are doing work that is satisfying and just challenging enough that it takes all our concentration to do it, without being so difficult you are struggling to do it. The 10,000 hour rule has been amended to take into account that just doing the same thing over and over again, doesn’t make you a master, you must make the effort for continual improvement.

Your customers are looking for mastery in their lives too. They certainly don’t want to feel stupid or inadequate. This gives you an opportunity to teach your customers what you know and to help them grow their mastery. How can you apply this in your business?

If you want to delight your team and make your place an attractive place to work, provide continual opportunities for your team members to master their skills and grow. You will attract the very best team members and they will get even better.

The Peter Principle says that one is promoted to the level of their incompetence. It’s the same way with our businesses. Your business grows to the level of our incompetence. In order to grow our business, you must increase your mastery of what it takes to grow your business. That may mean getting better at doing the work of your business, at connecting and  communicating with your customers, at building a great team or at making your business systems smoother.

It’s your business and you build it for you. Build it so it supports you in mastering your genius.

How can you bake mastery into your business for you, your customers and your team?
